The dress is made from a dark blue cotton with a cream/green/brown leaf pattern inspired by nature. The lining is beige calico, possibly originally cream. The dress is hand sewn and has been repaired many times but to a high standard. The original hand-stitched buttonholes have been replaced with hooks and eyes.
The front bodice is edged with cream ribbon. There is one bone down the centre from from the breast bone to the waist. There are pin tucks running from the shoulders to a point in the middle of the waist. The seams are covered by narrow piping across the shoulders, the sleeve tops, the waist, the high round neck and from the shoulders to the waist.
The skirt is gathered onto the shaped bodice. There is blue edging tape along the inside of the bottom hem. The flared sleeves finish with 2 ruffles edged with cream ribbon. There is a hook and eye fastening in the back to the waist, both inside and outside the garment.
The full length from the neck is 142cm with the skirt from the bodice being 100cm.
