A 'living history' museum

Lifelong learning

Our activities, defined on the Charity Commission website, state that ‘Four 19th Century weavers' cottages form a 'living history' museum providing education for children and the wider public of life in the domestic wool textile industry in the valleys of West Yorkshire’. The team is on hand to open the museum outside usual weekend opening times to a variety of groups by prearrangement.

Schools

We offer a variety of educational experiences, our most popular being the day with a Victorian weaving family, their friends and neighbours.

However, we can tailor the day to suit your class within the remit of the Victorian era of about 1840.

Groups

We offer a lively visit to Mrs Pearson’s house where a variety of craft sessions and storytelling are available as well as a chance to learn more about local history and the weaving industry. We take the words “Life Long” very seriously and open to groups from care homes and day care centres as well as to young adults with a variety of disabilities. These sessions are very relaxed and involve many cups of tea and time to chat. We tailor these visits carefully as the museum is not easy to access but with good thought and ingenuity, we can have a successful visit.

Social groups of all kinds are welcome and can be greeted with anything from a cup of tea to a good lunch. Again, we tailor visits to individual and group interests. For further information, please contact info@colnevalleymuseum.org.uk

Craft Club

The Craft Club meets at the Museum and provides an opportunity for those museum members to meet and enjoy a variety of crafts.

It also provides an opportunity for those who wish to learn a new skill, such as spinning or lace making, from more experienced members.

Children's Activities

We organise children’s activity sessions at special events and in school holidays. Children, with parents or grandparents, enjoy a variety of simple projects which allow them to succeed and take home their results.
